I confess to being confused by people not seeing Saab and safety as being intertwined. It becomes obvious when looking at Saab's heritage, as a builder of aircraft, as a car manufacturer, and as a Swedish company.

However, I've seen first hand Saab's emphasis on safety in a couple of incidents. The first was in the mid-80s. A coworker, her son in a safety seat in the back seat, stopped to make a left turn. Before traffic could clear, an older Cadillac, travelling in excess of 60 MPH rear ended her Saab 900. She and her son had no injuries. The driver of the Cadillac did. The Saab did not look pretty, in fact it was totalled, but the passenger cabin did its job.

My second experience involves my nephew who was driving a 2000 Saab 9-3 that I sold him a few months before. He was new to the town where he lived and missed seeing a red light in front of him. Unfortunately, a loaded dump truck did not miss him and hit the 9-3 on the right rear door and rear quarter panel. This spun the 9-3 into another car across the intersection. My nephew had no injuries and amazingly was not sore. I thought the 9-3 was in great shape considering what it had been through, but it was totalled. My nephew felt bad because he knew the memories I had of driving that car in Europe, Hawaii and across the mainland US.

The 9-5 was rated the safest car in Sweden for several years. The same honor given to the Saab 9000 in its time. The German ADAC spoke well of the safety of the 9-5, particularly the seats. I have no doubt the newer designs are better. The stats are there to support Saabs being safe even in the older years.
