I am personally very happy with the enlargements I've done. Most point and shoots are much better lately in the shutter timing department.
Back when there were only SLR's there weren't point and shoots with anywhere near today's camera tech, they were all basically "Brownies", fixed focus. Nowadays most point and shoots also have manual settings for those who know what needs to be tweaked for a given shot and a lot of tweaking can be done in photo editing programs.
The convenience of point and shoots, having a camera available for those priceless moments, far outweighs any quality advantage of a bulky DSLR style IMHO. Unless that is you outgrow your point and shoot and become ultra serious about your photography, only then would I upgrade to a DSLR. The compacts are just too good and too convenient for all but the deadly serious and even the pro's always have a point and shoot on hand.
My pro photo friend finds a swiveling screen, so he need not be facing the subject, to be invaluable for candid shots. Holding the camera up in the air looking at the screen swiveled down he can shoot 360 degrees over his head.
