Sony is in the lead of the convergence of a DSLR and video... the ONLY camera that has autofocus in video. New form factor but still APS sized sensor (eg bigger than the Olympus Pen's 4/3 sensor). Good camera for a kid... Little use of flash due to large sensor a good thing.

Check it out... I don't own one but do own a DSLR + multiple lenses and flashes and see this as the type of camera a young family will love. Sharp images, low noise and just as better in HD video than a dedicated camera.
What I find is too many family type shooters buy a DSLR and leave it in auto mode w/ the kit lens an wonder why their pics have no pop or sharpness in jpgs. Complex answer...another day.
