After much hesitancy and research, I went back to an SLR (after abandoning them when I abandoned film) about 18 months ago. After reading lots of reviews, I learned that the differences between brands were primarily quibbling the fine points. After reading lots of user comments, I learned that pretty much everyone is happy with what they have.
I ended up with an Olympus E-520 for several reasons:
1. it's 4/3 system makes it smaller than most DSLRs yet still delivers the advantages of bigger processors (size was very important to me);
2. image stabilization is built into the body, not the lens, so you don't have to buy it over and over (not an issue of you don't want IS);
3. Olympus lenses are of exceptional quality, and they are smaller than most;
4. the cost was low, and I was able to purchase body and two zoom lenses (28-300mm equivalencies) for under $600;
5. it felt good in my hands and the controls were intuitive for me.
6. the feature set of the camera matched closely the feature set of what I was hoping to do (e.g., it doesn't shoot movies and neither do I)
I also agree with Larry; take her shopping.
