an English Cocker Spaniel--close relative to the Springer--originally were the same breed. Very different from the American Cocker Spaniel. Have had one for 11 years and they are a great dog. Even disposition, happy either active or laid back.

Get one of those "best dog for you" types of books so you can understand the characteristics of the breeds and how they will fit your lifestyle, house, etc. This is critical. For instance high energy dogs like a Border Collie or a Siberian Husky needs tons of exercise. If you can't deliver you wind up with an unhappy dog.

Also, go to a dog show (go to American Kennel Club online to find one near you), see some dogs and talk to owners of the breeds you are interested in. They will give you the straight info.

And DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy from a pet store. Either get a mutt or buy from a breeder.

Many here have dogs, so you'll get lots of input.

Dogs are great critters. Fun and unconditional love.
