Yep, dogs can be a lot of work and expense. But most issues and potential troubles are easily dealt with by training and being a good owner. A properly trained dog is usually a happy dog.

Training a dog early on addresses a host of potential troubles. Most places, the ASPCA offers inexpensive training classes. The "boys" don't pee or poop in the house, don't chew furniture, and have caused almost zero damage. We have wood floors throughout the house and they (surprisingly) survive dogs well. The boys don't dig up the yard and there are ways to keep barking to a minimum. (something I wish one neighbor would do.) We live in a semi-rural area so taking them out to pee and poop is a lot simpler than in a city or suburb.

Taking care of someone else's dog is not necessarily a good way to decide because so many people don't do a good job of raising and socializing their dog, so you have to deal with existing bad behavior. Not fun!

No Snaab is right about the amount of care being a negative, especially if you like to do vacations/trips where dogs aren't welcome or are inconvenient to have along. Then you get to kennel them, which can get expensive. This can put a crimp in your travel plans, so do be aware of that.

A dog is a big commitment, but if you get the right dog for your own temperament and lifestyle and train the pooch early on, it will be a loving member of your family for many years. But think hard about this and get the right dog-- mutt or purebred doesn't matter as much as it being the right one for you.
