My wife and I have had four dogs from the pound, some chosen as adults, one as a pup. All have been wonderful in temperment and health. My husky-shepherd, who I picked at the pound at 10weeks old, died earlier this spring when he was 16.5y old, after a life full of hikes, kids, lying on the couch, and many road trips in a Saab and otherwise.

Huskies are great dogs -- good temperment in general and always game for action. The caveat is they have super strong prey instincts (most don't mix well with cats) and tend to be runners -- they value independence and adventure as much or more as making you happy. Without hard exercise, they may drive you nuts.

For a medium sized retriever, check out Duck Tollers. Generally loyal, active but don't need the activity level of a husky or border collie, and great with kids.

Take the kids to the pound and/or SPCA several times. Get a feel for what dogs are available there, but don't grab the first cute one. When the one that is the right mix of breed, age, personality appears, it will work out. It takes work and attention, but it's worth it. Most of all -- have fun!
