We had to put down our 12 year old purebred Lab in May. He was an absolutely wonderful dog; however, what with allergies, arthritis, the occasional trip to the emergency vet, and the knee replacement (tibial tuberosity advancement, if you want to be picky) he was a money pit.
There is a fair amount of data to support that purebred dogs (even with good pedigrees) may be more subject to health issues. There is something to be said for hybrid vigor.
So, we are now training a puppy again. After a lot of looking, we found a mixed breed puppy at a rescue place. Puppies tend to go very quickly, and a lot of them may have lineage that may scare you away (Rots, pit bulls, etc). We found a husky/australian cattle dog/brittany/springer mix. There were nine in the litter, and they were all adopted within a week.
He is pretty smart, is training well, and crate trained very quickly.
Many rescue organizations are very serious about population control, so he was already neutered at six weeks. He also had been microchipped, and had his first two rounds of shots. So, the $325 we paid was pretty reasonable considering the medical stuff already done, and the rest goes to support a lot of dogs at this no-kill shelter who will probably never find another home.
