The NG900 was as I understand it was the first Saab with much GM influence, and it was a hatch and allowed to be plenty "quirky." They built it until 2003. When they re-designed the 9-3 there's no doubt it was intended as an A4/3 series clone. Those cars clobbered the previous 9-3 sales-wise so one could rightly conclude that it is what that market segment seems to want. For good or bad, GM was trying to turn Saab into a more mainstream manufacturer. The problem is you can't have it both ways. You want quirky and hatchbacks then Saab will always be a niche mark, you want mainstream then you built a car like the others in it's market segment, which is what they did. GM's ownership of Saab has been a mixed bag of good and bad and fortunately those days are over. I think the business model of the current owners (not trying to be a large volumne manufacturer) is going to result the kinds of Saabs we'll all love.
