As you pointed out, I said "possible."
Saab was a struggling puppy back in the late 1980s, when the car industry in general was actually doing well, and needed a new partner/owner to effectively move forward. In the end, it basically came down to Fiat or General Motors and Saab management/stakeholders chose GM.
Given Fiat's history at the time I think Saab would have been worse off, if they even survived long-term, under Fiat's control had a Fiat-Saab deal even gone through.
I think General Motors "saved" Saab from a worse fate and in fact I, and many other enthusiasts out there, may never have had the opportunity to own a new Saab without GM's ownership. Thank you, GM, for that opportunity and perhaps Spyker will be able to do the same for future new Saab owners.
