The blame game Posted by Keith [Email] (#1462) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Keith) on Wed, 6 Oct 2010 11:22:28 In Reply to: Re: Quirkiness, kkelley, Tue, 5 Oct 2010 09:27:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
It is easy to blame GM for Saab's various problems - it's such a big easy target.
Some blame of GM of course likely is fair. But while GM was an imperfect Saab owner, it is fascinating that no one on this board (or other sites for that matter) ever seems comfortable suggesting any of Saab's problems over the years might have been the responsibility of anyone in Sweden.
The fact is that Saab was nearly bankrupt both when purchased by (in 1989) and when sold (in 2010) by GM. Sales actually went through some nice increases in the 1990's and until 2006 when it all began to unravel.
Suggesting that none of Saab's problems are the result of any bad decisions made in Trollhattan is a nice story line, but that's just a fairy tale. Frankly, I really don't know - I wasn't in meetings between GM and Saab execs over the years. But neither were the thoughtless GM bashers on here. History would seem to indicate that Saab created its own problems along the way before GM. JAJ has been CEO since 2005 - not a very fine run in the Saab timeline. He seems to have teflon regarding blame from Saab enthusiasts. Maybe that's fair, but we don't really know do we?
I agree with all the desires for "Saabiness" and quirky details, and I sincerely hope Spyker and the new Saab team can pull it off in the future. Meanwhile, some need to blame someone or something - and GM is there. It obviously just isn't a very complete or accurate story.
