My grampa Hal liked to point out that the purpose of locks is to keep honest people honest. No true thief has ever been deterred by a lock; it's the amateur or casual burglar who locks keep honest. Airport security is about the same as a hardware store lock: anyone who truly wants to blow up an airplane will figure out a way around the security, just as they have been doing with regularity since airport security began. As long as security continues to react to past threats rather than anticipate future ones, it's more an inconvenience than a deterrent.

Remember that scene in When Harry Met Sally where Meg Ryan verbalizes a fake orgasm in the middle of the busy restaurant? I think that should be our model. Whenever we're groped by security, I think we should all start moaning in loud faux pleasure.
