I think you can look at this from both sides.

Most people know the difference between routine maintenance, stuff that wears out, and stuff that breaks. They know they need to change the oil and maybe some filters. They know tires and brakes will wear out, but don't always think of those as repairs. But when the tranny dies, the a/c compressor goes south, the heater core springs a leak, or a wheel bearing dies, those are repairs to most people. So is a long-term wear item like a radiator, water pump, fuel pump or alternator.

Meanwhile, manufacturers are doing all they can to stretch service intervals to give the illusion of no maintenance. This does not bode well for the availability of well maintained pre-owned cars!

I look at the total cost of ownership, or TCO, so I lump it all together, but look at a given cost as being routine maintenance, wear item replacement or break/fix.
