When I had my car business I used to be amazed at the condition of Japanese car at auctions. They'd have 80, 90, 100K miles and be total crap. The transmission would be slipping, the interior would look like someone was raising chickens inside, the paint was dull, the engines would have blow by. The oil would be like mud, the trans fluid unchanged from new, the sparks plugs original. People literally think because it's a Japanese car they don't have to maintain it. And these people probably brag to their friends how they "didn't spend a dime" for 80K. They just lucked out because they traded it in before all hell broke loose. I've sold all of the major Japanese brands new and used and I've personally owned examples of each (I currently have a Subaru). They are good cars that last a long time. But they aren't perfect and they do require maintenance and the occassional repair just like any other car.
