1. Maine (up-state NY, western MA, VT, and midwest etc.) human settlements tend to be congregated in town centers of a few hundred houses each occupying less than a quarter acre, leaving the rest of the space, hundreds if not thousands, of acres to real for-profit farming. They were built by developers a century ago to shorten local utility pipe lines. NJ, CT and eastern MA tend to have "suburbia" stretching out for tens of miles, with each house occupying half acre to 5 acres, too small for real for-profit farming, but too sparse for effective town service, such as timely snow removal. They were developed half a century ago for parents fleeing from school bus'ing in the cities. Those suburbia towns have strict density limits, often requring minimum acreage an acre or more. That's where you find each household with their own SUV's, septic tanks, riding lawn mowers, and etc.

2. Mainers also have much higher rate of pickup ownership. Pickups are considered "uncouth" in the "suburbia."

3. SUV ownership rate in Maine is high dependent on whether Subaru Outbacks are classified as SUV's or wagons. It's been classified as an SUV since the early 2000's, so SUV ownership rate up in Maine is not low; many just look like wagons.

4. Mainers tend to drive more miles in a year, as the distance between towns are greater. People in NJ probably drive less miles in a year . . . that makes gas mileage less important.

5. Multi-vehicle accident rates tend to be higher in NJ than in Maine. As opposed to single-vehicle accidents, the relative weight and height matters for survival and avoiding injuries. Given the large numbers of delivery trucks on local roads all the time in NJ, and given the other parents' move to the heavier wagons, minivans and other SUV's, it became a matter of safety to opt for a jacked up short minivan/wagon/hatchback, aka "SUV."
