another good point you make: clearance on the newer cars (eg vs c900) makes a difference in snow, and is probably one of the main attributes for an SUV: the maximum depth of snow it can manage... the c900s are awesome until they bottom out, and the depth at which they bottom out is pretty reasonable (I've never had a problem + I go skiing on "snow days"). Newer models are a little lower to the ground I suppose for handling + fuel economy, though I find a c900 can more than keep up in handling (eg much better than the 9-3 hatch (eg prior to 2003), or the 9-5 imho)...
I'm quite interested in the 9-3x (haven't seen one yet), as it addresses that clearance issue in a car based format... I'm even more interested in the 2012+ 9-3x model (particularly if it comes as a hatchback) if one should exist ;-)...
