Tim's point about mpg difference between wagon + sedan (though the difference is pretty small at least in epa numbers) and Noel's 9000 image reminded me of a point I wanted to make in this wagon discussion... I'm really becoming a bigger fan of the 9000 style large hatch. Here's why:

1) aerodynamics (like Tim said) of a sedan

2) hauling capacity (almost) of a wagon: what matters mostly is how big the "mouth" is. though a wagon holds more volume, filling it to the roof is not good (both from sight lines + from stuff falling forward perspectives)

3) angle subtended in the rear view of a hatch is the same as a sedan, which is bigger than a wagon + safer (all because the rear window is closer).

4) hatch usually has a wiper whereas a sedan does not - quite handy in snow/slush mess.

5) cooler to look at! the execution of the rear of a late model year 9000 is brilliant. can barely tell it's not a sedan!

I said before that imho, having small hatch/sedan + large sedan/wagon made more sense as a lineup than say the dual sedan/wagon lineup of eg 2006-2009. I kind of still agree from a market clarity perspective, but it would be cool to see a 9-5 hatch (and we know they can do it, in principle, since it's been done in the Opel!)...
