Getting stuck in front of my drive way

I always knew that getting out of my own drive way and the one-ended single-lane street at the bottom of a hill immediately outside is the toughest part of winter driving; even parking lots at ski slopes are easier. If my car can get out there, it can go anywhere. Well, guess what I found today when going out to get my mail . . . a whole USPS mail delivery truck stuck on the snow/ice bank! One of those little right-hand drive wagons on very tall and narrow tires and promise to deliver in any and all kinds of weather. The tow truck was already coming when I saw him; otherwise, I'd have had the chance in a life time of jacking up a heavy piece of government property with my hydraulic jack onto planks of wood that I use; where are the jacking points on that again? LOL.
My own cars got stuck half a dozen times this year, all in my own drive way, and all during my attempts to drive off the side in order to keep the main part of the driveway clear so as to make room for expected guests, or making room for the town plow truck to push snow to the end of my drive way. Perhaps I should look into tire chains or the "portable tow truck" (plastic traction pads). Anyone having experience with either products on 9-3 or 9-5? The wood boards that I have been using with the hydraulic jack sometimes don't have enough grip to the ice below and would get launched by the spinning wheels like missiles. Perhaps I should cleat them.
