Tire chains are awesome, bordering on magic. They should be put on before you are stuck though for easy access around the tire. Less digging out of the tire needed.
Other than that, there is a pretty low top speed associated with them. You wouldn't take them on the highway.
I used to plow snow with my dad who did it professionally, and we'd put chains on the truck during the worst 10-20% of storms. Though a 4wd truck will go anywhere (including into the ditch), you need some extra traction to push snow and deal with the imbalance of the heavy plow. The heavy plow rig makes it handle like a FWD car.
