often service providers have a monthly bandwidth limit + you pay through the nose above that. I would want to check into that before using an online backup. That said, I wouldn't want to back up sensitive information online anyway...
My approach is to use external drives/other computers/NAS, but I only backup data, not programs. I try to keep directories well organized, so I can back up directories + not have to mess with separating stuff out at backup time. This makes it quick + easy. I don't mind doing a clean install of software periodically anyway. Some data we store off site also (hd + dvd) in case of fire. cdr/dvdr etc are kinda short term storage (though better quality discs last longer)... the only safe data is spinning data...
