I know you say you don't like Time Machine, but to me, imaging is the only way to go (as it does backs up EVERYTHING on the drive). I don't know about Time Machine, but on my PC (Windows 7 Ultimate) I swear by Norton Ghost (currently I am using version 15.0). Even with Raid (or mirror raid), I would still do an image backup. I personally don't have hours or days to spend restoring a computer.
I do backup to external drives (I have two) - but do a complete image backup once per month, and the incremental image backups nightly. If something goes wrong, I simply boot with the Ghost DVD, select the latest image from the external drive, and within 30 minutes, I am back to where I was the night (or any certain date) before.
It also allows you to restore certain files as well (in case of accidental deletion, etc). So, you get the best of both worlds.
I know you all know it, but it just makes me cringe at the procedure should something go wrong without an image backup (say drive failure, corruptions, etc):
1) Insert new (or format current) drive
2) install OS
3) install all OS updates (we all know how long that takes)
4) reinstall all applications
5) restore you backups of data (photos, video, music, docs, etc)
Total time image = minutes, traditional method = hours or even days.
Now deciding on where to store your images - I guess you could store online or off site for protection, but I don't take it that far yet.
