Saab dilemma: what identity for these times?

As a long-time Saab owner (900's, 9000's, 9-5's) I think that Saab, via it's long association with GM (among other things), has lost its way, maybe an inevitable thing in these times.
The 9-7 and the 9-2 were just badge-engineered vehicles, designed to give the Saab brand something to sell in those respective markets. Neither car looked or drove any diffeently than lots of other cars in their competitive classes.
Saab used to have a "tradition" of selling innovatively-designed cars that were just a bit "different" - and didn't cost a fortune. That's why people bought them back then. How do you GROW the market for more "individualistic" cars? By competing with "luxury" car builders? I dunno.
The 9-4 is, IMHO, just another big, heavy, not particularly stylish "Me, too" car. It was planned years ago when Saab was still under the GM yoke and was obsolete before it ever rolled off the assembly line. With $6 gasoline just over the horizon, the 9-4's 18 mpg city/highway doesn't bode well, either. The whole SUV thing is still something I don't get.
Personally, I also think that $50K for ANY car is just obscene.
