I just bought a 2004 9-5 for about the same as the tax on a new 9-5. The car is basically new.
That said, fortunately there are those willing to buy new. 2 of my friends just bought new Foresters this year. Comparable cost to a Hyundai, less than a Saab. I know what you're saying. Hyundais + Subarus are (now) a great value proposition for new cars (for what they are), and Saab has lost customers there... But I don't think Saabs are less value now than before... it's just the lesser cars are adopting more luxury features + becoming more competitive. That said, there is still a huge difference to those who notice it. 1 long highway drive in a Subaru vs a Saab sealed that one for me!
Maybe the option of cloth seats, basic features etc might sell a few more 9-3's if the price was low enough? but would it really? where else would they have to cut costs? can they compete with the Koreans + Japanese on price? I doubt it. Better to make nice cars + fill that niche... imho... I think there are buyers. Look at all the audis + bmws on the road. Just because we aren't that type doesn't mean someone else isn't...
2.0T Sonata with leather/etc in Canada msrp is $32k. That is more than the discounted prices we've seen on the 9-3ss over the past few years (as low as $28k), but <msrp (our overpriced dealer has one listed at $37.5k)! Hyundais get discounted also though... surprisingly similar...
