Lots of cars aren't really affordable for a great many people. And IMHO the value received for that a big spend on an everyday car is kinda questionable.
The other part of affordable is ownership cost. Virtually any car priced north of say $40K is expensive to buy/lease, service, insure, register, etc. Some of this is opportunistic charges from dealers and insurance companies, but it's part of the cost of pricier cars.
It's not that the high-zoot cars aren't great machines. Having driven and ridden in a wide assortment of high-end Mercedes, Audis, BMWs, Porsches, etc, I know they are exceedingly nice cars. So are things like CTS Caddy's and even Lexus and Infinitis. But are they worth the price? That's where it gets subjective.
My contention is more about practical value. That for what you *really* get--a solid, comfortable, safe and well-made car with some satisfying level of performance, $50-Large, or even $40K is ridiculous IMO. And I'd say always has been.
The priciest of my three Saab 9000's listed a bit north of $40K new. I got that one used for $10K and have put >80K miles on it. My wife's 9-5 was $42K new. We got it for half that when it turned 3 years old. We get the same performance and features as the first buyer but we also get a better value.
Now you look at something like a Hyundai Sonata, which can be had new for about $20-25K. Is it a Saab? No way, no how. But it is affordable and a huge value for a great many people. I gotta think it is.
If one has deep enough pockets to fork over the money for a fast-depreciating asset, gets the ego lift out of having spent a lot on a new car, then they can "afford" it. Whatever floats that boat.
