Sticker price comparisons are only part of it too. Monthly payments are a lot lower today due to low interest rates, long-term financing availability, etc. Not that there aren't drawbacks to people "burying" themselves in long-term finance contracts but decades ago the typical finance contract was 36 to 48 months while today it's 60 to 72 months.
If you financed $20,000 in 1990 (about $33,900 today) at 12% APR for 48 months ("long term" for the time) the monthly payment would be $527 or $892 in today's dollars!! That's probably at least 60% higher than what someone could finance the same amount (adjusting for inflation) today under today's typical long-term finance rates and terms i.e. 72 months.
Same deal with leasing. Payments are notably lower than what you could get decades ago. In the early 1990's Saabs "lease deal" on 9000s was $399/month. That's over $675/month today.
I still say that the new Saabs have been more affordable than ever in recent years even if salaries have been flat or even declining.
