The dealer might try to argue that, but I think the "reasonable man" has the right so assume that the dealer does the work competently. You probably should notice the light, but your level of car knowledge should not impact the duty of the mechanic to do his job. FYI - the mechanic was already grossly negligent for driving the car out of the bay and into the parking lot without noticing the light was on.
Meanwhile, it's not going to court. It will settle. The dealer knows his but is hanging out a mile and will not spend money on a lawyer that will cost as much as a settlement. Dealers are also insured for negligence.
