Years ago I rode in a rental car from Miami to Ft Lauderdale with a dash light flickering. The driver thought it was low coolant. At Ft. Lauderdale the engine sounded noisy, there was no oil on the dip stick. Added a couple quarts and the car ran ok for the next week including the trip back to Miami. There must have been enough oil to keep everything turning.
