Flying first class

We were in Miami Beach last weekend and on the way home we noticed people who got taken to the front of the line for security screening. When I asked they said they were first class passengers. I thought first class was just an airline thing, I had no idea it extended to the Federal Government. The government doesn't get anything extra from first class passengers, at least to my knowledge. So why should they get special treatment from the government? I've never seen that anywhere else.
