I always wondered about this too, as it doesn't seem too fitting that a government funded service plays favorites like that. Technically the government does make a lot more off first class fliers (taxes!), but I think the argument is typically that flying is a commercial service that happens to employ TSA agents and the airports can otherwise run security as they wish.
I have airline status and it is a nice perk if the lines are long, though not nearly as nice as getting on the plane a little early and not having to worry about the melee for overhead storage space these days!
Sometime people seem a little jealous about upgrades, perks, etc. and I usually tell them that all this can be theirs too, and all they have to do is spend $10k a year on flights and countless hours sitting around airports, delayed flights, and long trips to place you don't necessarily want to go, and their enthusiasm tends to dampen a bit. Still, I enjoy that business travel breaks up my routine and the perks do help make things a bit more enjoyable.
