Or at least that's my simple answer...
English: native speaker (northeastern US)
German: 5+ years high school/college instruction
Danish: 5 months immersion during a semester abroad
Also had some schooling in Latin, French and Spanish but didn't have as much interest in them. I'm really good at learning pronunciation and accents though, so even if I don't know much vocabulary, I can surprise people by how well I speak.
The thing I find really fascinating is families of languages. English and German have a definite common ancestry, but learning Danish really opened my eyes to this. I actually find that my analytical nature (as an engineer) helps me dissect word origins and grammatical structure in ways that I couldn't have understood as a child. As quickly as I picked up Danish, I also began to unlock the closely-related Swedish and Norwegian, as well as a little bit of Dutch and Icelandic - though mostly just for reading. I haven't pursued this as much lately, but I occasionally see a new word or phrase and realize that I can already guess what it means.
You often hear people talking about the Romance languages...well, I guess the Germanic languages are more of my thing!
