My first Japanese car was a '78 Honda Civic which was basically a small tin can with a spunky little engine and a cool wooden steering wheel. It was great fun to drive, but 100 miles on the road would beat you to death. Civics of the era were known as 50K cars, and at 40K mine started acting as if it were near death, so we dumped it while the dumping was good.
My favorite of the era was a 1983 Mazda 626. Much more refined than the earlier Honda, with classy handling & acceleration for the time. I used to commute to grad school in that car, up and down the spine of the Alleghenies, pushing the limits of those curvy back roads. Put 130K on that car over about 10 years, but it was suffering some major rust when fifth gear went out on my daughter driving home from college. Still, someone gave me $500 for the rusty, gearless thing.
