The japanese applied the lessons of Dr. Deming extermly well, concentrating on quality above all else. In a testimony to Deming's theories, the quality of car they produced reaped significant long term rewards and customers began to flock to them in droves. At the same time, the American manufacturers continued to concentrate on cutting costs and the results were also as predicted - a massive loss of customers as quaility dropped.

Unfortunately, by the 80's, Japanese manufacturers had become complacent in their success. They began to act like the American manufacturers. Little problems began to appear, and they've worsened over time. Instead of baking up their products with an almost Rolls Royce like attitude as they did before (our cars never break down... and if they do, we fix them at no cost), they started to duck-n-cover any time a significant problem occurred.

The result is what we see today: Japanese cars of questionable quality - and when a problem occurs that's widespread, the first deny, then argue, and eventually grudgingly fix enough to repair their dying reputation. They're now living off what they used to do, not what they do, and it's a declining direction.
