Just recently got done putting new transmission, suspension, tires, a light bar / bumper, and skid plates front and rear on my recently inherited Subaru Forester - so naturally I wanted to go out and see how everything performed on the first dry night I could.
The mountain I was heading up to is pretty common among off-road enthusiasts and so I assumed there would probably be a decent amount of people there even on a Monday night. WRONG. We saw two other cars. Anyways we got up there around 9:30PM right after the sun went down and drove around for an hour or two then decided to stop and build a fire and have a beer.
Well, took us about 10 minutes to get a decent fire going, and so we cracked open a beer and in the background I'm hearing some pretty loud twigs / branches snapping in the forest (kinda thinking it's just my imagination (fire crackling and echoing)). So another five minutes go by and my buddy starts hearing it too. Since we had seen a few deer on the way up (one that almost became a hood ornament) we just figured it's probably nothing and went on to finish our beer and then we heard it. Something real BIG and HEAVY walking on the gravel road not 20 yards from us. We had no light other than the fire so instead of being a manly man and waiting to see whatever it was that was making the noise, we both ran as fast as humanly possible and jumped in the car. I turned on the lights as fast as I could and right there less than thirty feet from the car / our fire was a big huge bear. Scary. As soon as I started the car it turned and went off into the woods but just to realize how much of a close call that was leads me to this thread:
I need some form of protection. My father in law was out riding his motorcycle in that area just a few days prior and had a bear cross the trail 50 feet away from him, and seeing as how I go camping and fishing a lot in areas very near the one we were at, I think it'd probably be foolish not to carry protection in the future.
Most of the time I am away from my car I would have no issue carrying a rifle in either my boat or on my back. I do understand that a gun is only as effective as the person shooting it, I have lots of experience with pistols and shotguns but really am looking for something with enough stopping power to put down bear / cougar / etc.. Semi-auto would be preferred, but I am looking for something on the lower end of the price scale.
If anyone has experience with firearms I am begging for feedback as I don't know much about guns other than line up the sights and pull the trigger, and I don't know anyone personally who does have any experience.
Thanks =)
