unless you are in grizzly bear country (or up north), I wouldn't worry about it... 99% of black bears are interested in your food, not you as food... I've occasionally seen bears in the woods... never had an issue (and would never consider carrying a gun for that!)... get as big as you can + back away facing the bear... don't feed them: encourages problem bears... don't get between mom + cub...
polar or grizzly? good luck with that! I don't live in the rockies or up north... I did hear a story of a polar bear tracking/following a guy on a skidoo all the way to his house (for some insane distance)... he was lucky he had enough gas... but one could say that for other reasons also...
fwiw, where I grew up, far more people got shot by their buddies while out deer hunting(/drinking) than bear attacks... was almost dangerous to go out in the woods in season! if you carry a gun, learn how to use it!
