I think that you are better off learning more about how to be safe in bear territory and learning about bear behavior. As others said, if it were a black bear, it is very unlikely it would have attacked you and your buddy. It was likely more curious about what you who you were. It was likely circling around you to get a good scent on you and determine if you had food with you. I have come across black bears in the forest and suburbs before without any incidents, I just give them their space and let them go along their way. I actually consider some of my neighbors' dogs more dangerous.
If it were an angry or desperately hungry grizzly, my opinion is that your chances of defending yourself with any type of gun, while drinking beers, in the dark, against an attacking grizzly is pretty darn low. You would most likely miss or never get the piston/ rifle/ shot gun out in the first place. It took you guys quite a while to even recognize a bear was circling you. If were going to attack, you would not have even seen it coming.
If you do spend that much time in bear country, it is not a bad idea to carry a weapon. But I would use education, awareness, and pepper spray as first line of defense. Firearm would be last resort.
