It would be a tragedy if a great creature like a bear were to die because it got curious and checked out a human or mistook one for food.
However, in a life or death situation where escape or other choices are impossible, your 12 guage shotgun loaded with slugs is the cheap and easy choice. But again, in my opinion this is a last resort when escape and non-lethal weapons aren't working. Basically it shouldn't ever be necessary to fire a weapon at a bear...
