25 years of working in the woods as a forester & I never had a problem with a bear. 11 years of that time I worked in a municipal watershed that was closed to the public and had a lot of bears. In June I could take you out to a particular area and guarantee you would see a bear. I never had a problem with a bear and never heard of any other personnel who did.

Earlier in my career I walked out a closed old logging road to a logged over unit. Got to the landing and stepped up onto a log to get a better view over the brush--then I noticed a bear on the other end of the log. He went one way & I went the other and neither of us ran.

OTOH, there was a Swedish family who had rented a camper and camped by a lake on our district in Montana. They went for a walk in the evening and encountered a bear. The bear chased them back to the camper and tried to open the door, ripping at a triangle at the bottom corner. They had no weapons, but did have a can of bug repellent, which they sprayed in the bear's face. It took off. We had no grizzlies on our district so this was a black bear.

Lastly, the only critter other than yellow jackets that ever chased me was a moose. She only chased me far enough to be satisfied I was no threat to her newborn calf.

I suspect the bear didn't know you were there.
