For close to 15 years I bought nothing but used Saabs and paid cash. I got to drive some very lovely cars and yet spent a small fraction of what most people spend on cars. For long car trips we rented new cars which is one of the rationalizations people used to justify always buying new. Admittedly I was fortunate to have access to a well equiped shop complete with a lift, good mechanics I trusted and living in West MI had a network of friends and relatives if I had a car problem--although that rarely happened. Two years ago I got a job in the mountains of CO and as a condition of employment had to have AWD. So I bought a late model (4 years old w/60K)Subaru which I financed. That car tuurned out to be a never ending money pit--it always had something going on with it. I ended up with the worst of both worlds--payments and repairs. So when I moved to the Auburn Hills, MI area (Lake Angeles) my intension was to buy a different car immediately. I figured that would be a late model, low mileage Saab 9-5 but I just couldn't find anything. The closest I came was an '07 with 40K but that sounded too much like what I had with the Subaru. Late model used cars are hard to find at the moment and the real deals seem to be on new cars, so that's what I decided to do. The 9-3 is just too small and a 9-5 is a bit more than I wanted to spend, as was the 9-4. In addition my new job/home is a mile down a not so well maintained dirt road so it looked like I would need AWD. Anyway I ended up leasing a new Jeep Wrangler. My current thinking is I'm just going to lease a new car every 3 years--this car costs me about $50 more a month than the used Subaru and is totally under warrenty. I have a set payment amount and other than routine maintenance won't have major repairs. Yes, I know this isn't the cheapest way to go, but given the complexity of late model cars and the cost to repair them it may not cost that much more. So my take on it is either buy used and pay cash or buy new/very close to new.
