I have heard the use of money & cost of money argument as justification for all kinds of mechanisms- including leasing & home equity loan & outright car loans. On occasion one may break even & if very lucky could come out a a bit ahead, but most of the time it's a loss. Your analysis also ignores the money made on your savings while accumulating the funds.
A big part of the money savings is the hesitation one has in writing a check for $30 grand.The old car looks better as the reality lands. If you buy one or two fewer cars in a lifetime you are ahead quite a bit.
