This is exactly the key detail. There is no "right" answer, what's best will vary from person to person and situation to situation. If you can fix your own car, whatever you wanna own and fix is your prerogative. If you can't, you may want to stick to something common or cheap to fix. If you aren't good at managing money and can't save to handle those random repairs, a car payment and a ride under warranty may make sense. If you can get a good return on an investment, financing may be a good use of money. If you can't, paying cash might be the correct approach. Different options exist because people have different needs. Money management is surely not a one size fits all. The only thing I can honestly say is always a bad idea is financing a used, out of warranty car with high maintenance requirements while you're on a tight budget. I see lots of younger people financing 5 or 7 year old highline cars, stretching their cashflow to its extremes. That scenario is ALWAYS a bad idea. You don't need a 3-series at 20, and you can't afford to fix it when it breaks.
