Many many years ago, one of my graduate school advisors told me, "Slow down young man, you will finish faster". One purpose of graduate school is to teach people how to think. What you learn today, no matter what field you choose will become dated, and the ability to think things through and continue to learn is a valuable asset. It permits one to venture in and enjoy different areas. This is what you are doing and as your are experiencing is not done over night. It is not unusual for many bright people to excel in several areas. Physicians become astronauts, lawyers become engineers, athletes become philanthropists, and like you and me Saab enthusiast come from different fields. Tolstoy, was a writer and physician, Franklin was an inventor and statesman, our presidents come from different backgrounds, Carter was a peanut farmer, Reagan an actor, Bush an oil man. People can excel in one area and then because they know how to think and learn can move into or take on other fields, which they enjoy too. All of life's learning experiences add up, they are not wasted. People don't stop learning when they finish graduate school and do go on to enjoy other fields and activities. While It is difficult, though not impossible to learn two divergent fields simultaneously, most of us, learn sequentially, that is one field at a time,. So, focus on your field of study and know other interesting fields await you. Here's some free advice, take as you wish. Stop being so hard on yourself, you obviously are gifted and have much to offer. Let time be your ally and slow down, yes smell the roses as you go along. You may learn some new and different things and even learn about yourself. We all at times dream like Walter Mitty and wish we were somewhere else, but stay focused. If some aspect of your field of study seems boring, consider delving into it in more depth, perhaps you may have overlooked something. And never loose your wonderful sense of wonder, it is one of life's gifts. I hope this helps somewhat, if it does, consider helping someone else along the way.
