There are so few people who really know/enjoy math that your education and attraction to math is a big asset. Any hedge fund, private equity fund, bank or computer firm will value your ability to master math and analyze abstract problems. Math is very objective and logical in nature.

Film strikes me as more of an emotional undertaking, an interesting contrast. Being a more subjective field, it probably has lower barriers of entry for "film makers", meaning it will be harder to distinguish your self from others.

At 24.5, you have not made any fatal mistakes, (like getting a degree in gender studies or post medieval modern art, where there are no real jobs, or marrying a reality TV star with a kid from some lost weekend party at Hef's place).

If you don't have the masters in math (got lost in the long post, sorry), get it done. That is a rare achievement. Maybe write to companies while still in school and say, hey, I'm doing this, I graduate next year, what opportunities are available with someone with my skills, can I come in and meet with you to find out?. Aim high, like Google, Apple, mastery of math shows a disciplined mind, they will have opportunities that will complement your natural problem solving/math skills.

Once you are hired and have a few years of experience at something, and financial security, then dabble in the film industry. Your career security will alow you to take risks in film, where failure won't be fatal. You have plenty of time at your age.

As a good friend of mine who was a computer engineer for Intel in its early days, then started an engineering firm that he sold out to a conglomerate at a big profit, became a successful lawyer, then an executive at a hedge fund, started a radio station from scratch(his favorite field) and later sold it at a big profit once said: "Never make your hobby your job. You will have nothing to enjoy when you are not at work."

My advice to 20 somethings is "If your college promised there will be no math, you didn't get a full education."

Use you natural love of math to get a career going. Then do film. Just remember us when you are famous.
