I actually did major in film/video production and writing. I did corporate video for a number of years, ran a company that did animation, wrote corporate scripts and newspaper/magazine articles on a free-lance basis. It was always intersting but the big problem is there are just so many people who want to do this kind of work it's hard to make money at it. There's a never ending parade of film production graduates willing to do anything just to have some kind of job in the industry. Most of them never do and end up doing something else. Film production is one of those "warm and fuzzy" majors that appeal to a lot of young people because it sounds like fun and nothing at all like a real job. If you're one of the 1% who gets to the top it is, but for the rest there's nothing warm and fuzzy about trying to get a job and earn a living with that kind of degree. So the question is do you simply like the IDEA of being a film maker or do you really have a passion for making films? My son was majoring in architecture (another "wamm fuzzy" major)and one day I asked him, if I went and looked through your house, how many magazines and books would I find on architecture? He confesseed not too many. That's a very difficuult business and you have to have architecture burning in your gut to be successful at it. My son's real passion was cars, he ended up getting a job selling high end European cars, makes great money and loves it. I'm not looking to quash your dreams but you need to know that a lot of jobs that look like fun from the outside may not be as wonderful as you think. If I had it to do over again I'd major in something hard, something very few people are willing and able to do, something where there is demand for your abilities. You have a free ride with this-two years goes by quick (and will give you time to think)), at the end you'll have a masters degree which you'll never regret. You might warm up to what you're doing and it won't be too late to change to something else. Good luck.
