Cost is one of the reasons I run Linux on standard "PC" hardware rather than buy a Mac. (In the AMC world we call this the "Rambler Mentality." Anyone old enough to remember Rambler's place in the automotive pecking order will know what this means.) Another is that I prefer the freedom available through the use of open-source software.
I install a lot of Linux servers for businesses, in fact the only time I'll install Windows Server is if a critical application requires it on the back end. The desktop is a much harder sell because their mindset is that they "need Microsoft." ("Microsoft" usually meaning "Outlook," "Word," etc.) Frequently businesses also need to run some type of software which will only run on Windows clients even if a Unix-type database is supported on the server.
For a non-technical end user, though, the Mac is probably going to be the easier route even though Linux is much easier to use now than it was years ago. Still, one can give Linux a try for essentially no cost, just download a CD image, burn it, and boot off it.
