Microsoft has always chosen "feature over security". If they think they can sell it, the obviosu security holes are never a concern... until they get hacked, then suddenly MS spings into action.

My favorite was a few years ago when MS sold their web server with the ability for anyone on the Internet to call a program from anywhere on your web server, unlike every other web server out there - they didn't allow calls outside the web server virtual structure. It wasn't long before the rif-raff discovered that they could call c:\system\anything to run from anywhere. Doh. All part of MS's strategy to intergrate all their applications across the web server platform. Feature over security.

MS's solution was to lock down the rest of the server so that the calls would fail... making the security on the web server machine so difficult to manage that MS then had to come out with a program just to set it up. No one at MS could tell you what settings to make, they just said "run the security program".

If that wasn't ignorant enough, they also refused to establish a separate user security database for the web server, insisting that it had to use the NT user security and/or Active Directory. Once again, great as an integration feature, terrible as a security feature. Now every one with a user/pass account from a web page has access to the web server machine itself or the corporate network. Again, feature over security.

My rant for the day :-)
