I live by a few simple rules...
1) do I need a lift or jacks... I don't have one & I don't want to crawl under a car.
2) If I "mess" something up or get stuck, what's the likelihood I can get things back together to the point I can drive to my indy... vs. needing a tow.
So that limits me quite a bit, particularity in the engine bay & under the car... but I can still do work on the interior and swap out simple things under the hood, and do some basic maintenance & cleaning of things like the TB.
That said, my indy only charges his cost for parts (and he is good at using used, rebuilt & aftermarket parts when appropriate) so all I am paying for is his reasonable hourly rate.
