You replace a HD because it goes bad (too many bad sectors etc). Not super common if you buy quality drives, but it does happen. That is also why you back up your HD. If you think your Mac is immune to HD failures, you are kidding yourself big time! A Seagate in your Mac is not better than the Seagate in my desktop PC. That is imho one of the greatest problems with Apple: in order to market their products as "friendly", they have created a vast sea of complacency through lack of knowledge... the "Mac Toaster" syndrome...

Some PC's are trash + disposable for sure, but Macs have had their share of problems also over the years, and the trouble is they often require nonstandard + pricey service to deal with said problems, whereas most problems in a PC can be cheaply fixed the same day with a trip to any local computer store (and often DIY as opposed to dealer serviced ;-). Fortunately Macs are generally reasonably good for reliability, so they aren't a bad buy, but they are not the holy grail of computing in that sense either.

My suggestion to Stickman is to avoid any computer product that is overly integrated or customized (eg built in monitor). Ie, avoid Imac, get a Mac Mini. Avoid a Dell, get a generic PC built with quality parts (eg ASUS mainboard vs some shoddy brand with the same spec at half the price).

Probably a good idea to go try out a Mac + see what you think. Imho, the mini is a very good gateway for a former PC user (if nothing else, you can connect it to your existing mouse, keyboard, and monitor + get started right away relatively cheaply)...
