again, Mac doesn't make HDDs... so "Mac HDDs seem to hold up pretty well" means the Seagate, or WD, (or whatever brand Apple happens to use at a given moment) HDDs put in Macs hold up pretty well. I think that is a pretty fair statement. I've easily owned a dozen HDDs in my PCs (some of which are now over a decade old) and have only had 1 failure, and well it's not a complete failure - it still runs, but is a little flakey + I've been able to extract the data. It was a Maxtor from back when Maxtor had a round of bad drives... I think the commonness of HDD failures is somewhat overstated (outside of the sysadmin world)... or I'm just lucky!
I have added HDDs multiple times to computers as they age. I think that is a pretty important capability. But even on a Mac Mini, I'm sure I'd be fine just hooking up an external drive if I was desperate for space...
Advice wrt hard drive purchases: avoid the bargain drives/cheapest grades. don't buy from the end of a run. search the net (eg Tom's Hardware Guide and Newegg ratings) for current drive reliability info before purchase. I usually also avoid the absolute fastest drives + look for quiet. I think it will not be long before SSD's are the only way to go + I look forward to that!
Always back up data regardless of HDD brand or Mac vs PC because there is no guarantee any drive won't fail at any given moment... RAID is a good idea for critical live data...
James...
