Toyota engines have wide torque bands

Unlike the peaky Honda engines before the 3.5L in Pilot and MDX (which now uses a 3.7L), Toyota engines have wide torque bands. The 3.0L drafted from Camry for service in the original RX300 might have been under-powered and under-torqued, but the 3.3L and 3.5L used across the SUV and car lines in the past decade are very torquey engines. The gearing ratios on the SUV's are quite widely spaced out. Our Highlander V6 turns over at lower RPM at the same highway speeds than the OG9-5 wagon that we also have. The main downside of those "SUV's" is that at speeds much over 80mph, the wind noise start to become noticeable and unpleasant; the sunroofs are unusable at any speed over 65mph due to wind buffeting; the factory cross bar on the roof rack may have something to do with it, but that same cross bar also comes very handy when carrying a canoe to the lake. The quiet riding quality of the OG9-5 just begs 90mph or even 100mph before I even notice it; I have to use cruiser control to keep myself out of trouble. LOL.
The Mazda5 has a Ford corporate Duratec, which was developed over a decade ago when Ford wanted to be Honda.
