look at the HDLI numbers for real life data. For the same class of car as the 9-3 or 9-5, Saab, Volvo, and Audi are all very good, typically 40-50% better than average. Subaru's not too far back (as are a few other cars). Other brands, even those with better IIHS test scores don't do as well. To some extent this is related to who is designing cars to be safe (and happen to test well) vs those who design to pass the test (the specific subset of tests that incompletely represent the real world)...

I'd probably look at Volvo or Audi if I had to (though both have their drawbacks)... I sure hope Saab survives... that said, I have 3 Saabs + should be able to keep at least 2 (if not all 3) going for a long time... If I was to lose one (collision, or whatnot), I'd probably pick up another used saab (so long as the market for them does not go crazy)...
